YAWN...

The joys of midday napping are known by young and old alike. For Grace, this sometimes takes the form of lying naked on the living room couch while Daddy Jim catches up with the ladies of The View. On this particular morning, Daddy sat riveted as Elizabeth Hassleback tried to lure First Lady Obama and Dr. Jill Biden into a conversation about the political implications of disgraced Joint Chiefs Chairman General Stanley McChrystal's serivce on their commission for military families (Michelle was not having it!), Grace was more interested in resting her eyes and enjoying an unencumbered stretch on one of her favorite handmade blankets. This is in part because, at night, Gracie, like other 4-week old babies, must sleep swaddled. For the uninitiated, this feels at times like the equivalent of putting your child to bed in a straightjacket. However, the importance of this method of sleep must not be understated. A leading cause of SIDS is believed to be the preventable suffocation of children placed in their crib with other "stuff": blankets, loose clothing, stuffed animals, cushioned padding on the crib walls. So, swaddling is an important preventive measure. Still, watching your child struggle to free her precious little hands from the swaddle with a determination that would make Houdini himself envious is one among many things that can (and does at times) make this grown man cry. So giving our little angel the chance to take a good nap with her arms outstretched and her belly haning out--while under the watchful eye of oner of her dads--is a prioirty in the MacDonald Schuerman household.
